Crazy to think that in a few short days we will be on a plane to China, and then boarding another bound for Tokyo, JAPAN! It’s our first “real” family vacation and it’s a BIG one!
Lately, and basically since we’ve announced our trip, we’ve gotten so many questions as to why in the world we are doing this. And we get why, for sure. Sometimes I still ask myself that!
“Do you have family in Japan?” No.
“Have you been there before?” No.
“And your really bringing the kids!?” Yes!
“Do you speak Japanese?” No.
“Hope you like sushi!” YEP! We all do, especially the kids!
Steve and I were both blessed to be avid travelers before we met and while we were dating. I speak French and lived in the south of France for 6 months. Steve and I both studied in Austria as well in a school that used to be a 13th century monastery in the Alps. We’ve been to some pretty cool places combined including France, Austria, Russia, Venezuela, Croatia, Poland, Canada, the Caribbean, and Finland to name just a few.
When we were dating (so young and naive!) Steve’s family took me along on a springtime vacation to the Almalfi Coast in Italy. (it was hilarious how they did it though: YOU BETTER MARRY HER IF SHES COMING! – Luckily that worked out pretty darn well)
The Almalfi Coast was amazing and we continued to scheme where we would someday go. Our early bucket list included climbing Machu Picchu, skiing in Quebec, and strolling the streets of Paris together.
After we were married we jetted off the Hawaii for 15 days, a few days in Oahu, Kauai, and The Big Island – and it was all pure bliss. (Hawaii is other worldly, and if Steve wanted to I would move there tomorrow) I loved Hawaii so much that I actually cried on the plane when we left!
We always thought we’d continue our adventures through our marriage but…surprisingly…
..law school, student loans, and three kids kind of slowed the process down. (who would have thought right?!😛)
Now we’ve been incredibly blessed to visit some amazing places in Florida, Colorado, and North Carolina thanks to the generosity of our family, but this trip is extra special a few reasons.
First of all, it’s the first time we’ll be alone. Just US!
Now that we are more settled in who we are as a couple and family, and have started a journey towards minimalism (I’ll blog about that another time), we feel like this is the perfect time to start traveling again, and really want our kids to share in the experience.
We KNOW they will learn so much and will have a broader world view. They’ll have a greater respect for different cultures and realize how big the world is and how Gods people come in all shapes, colors, and sizes and that is beautiful.
SO WHY JAPAN?
1. It’s our TEN year anniversary this July!
2. Why not?
3. We feel its the farthest we could go with the kids while bringing them to one of the safest destinations in the world.
4. Steve’s Grandfather landed on Okinawa during World War II. It’s CRAZY to think we will be snorkeling in a place where he fought for our country and his very life. That if anything had gone differently we wouldn’t be there at all.
5. The culture is SO different. We won’t even be able to read basic signs. TOTAL ADVENTURE TOGETHER!
6. Um…Tokyo Disney. (don’t judge)
So there you have it. We’ll be blogging, vlogging, and posting on instagram @tribebychar over the next few weeks if you’d like to follow along on our fun adventure across the world.
